A complete guide to installing a new air conditioner the right way

Installing an air conditioner takes more than mounting the unit and plugging it in. Poor workmanship means higher power bills, weak cooling, early failures and possibly a void manufacturer's warranty.

A poorly installed air conditioner can use more power, cool weakly, wear out quickly and even lose the manufacturer's warranty. Below are the key practices that help you get the installation right from day one.

7 practices for installing an air conditioner correctly

  1. Choose the right location

Where you install the unit directly affects cooling performance and service life.

    Indoor unit

    • Place it centrally so the airflow spreads evenly through the room
    • Avoid blowing air straight at a bed or a desk
    • Mount it about 10–15 cm below the ceiling

    Outdoor unit

    • Put it somewhere well ventilated and sheltered
    • Keep it out of direct sunlight
    • Leave at least 30 cm of clearance on all sides for heat dissipation
  2. Get the copper pipe length and routing right

The copper piping is the lifeline of the whole system.

    Keep in mind

    • The minimum length is usually 3 metres (it varies by brand)
    • Avoid runs that are too short or have sharp bends
    • Keep joints to a minimum to prevent refrigerant leaks

Tip:Correctly routed piping helps the unit cool faster and use less power.

  3. Vacuum the system — a required step that is often skipped

This step is critical, yet many installers skip it to save time.

    Vacuuming the lines

    • Removes air and moisture from the pipes
    • Prevents icing and refrigerant blockages
    • Extends the life of the compressor

Watch out:Without a vacuum, the unit can lose efficiency and fail within 6–12 months.

  4. Install a safe electrical supply

An air conditioner draws a lot of power, so it needs its own circuit.

    Make sure there is

    • A dedicated circuit breaker for the unit
    • Wiring of the correct cross-section
    • A stable power supply

This prevents short circuits and fires and protects the equipment over the long term.

  5. Check the drainage and prevent leaks

A badly fitted drain line causes problems that are hard to live with.

    Common consequences

    • Water dripping indoors
    • Damp, mouldy walls
    • Unpleasant smells

    Keep in mind

    • The drain pipe needs a proper slope
    • It must not be kinked or blocked
  6. Test and inspect thoroughly before sign-off

After installation, run a full check before you pay.

    Check whether

    • The unit cools quickly
    • There is any unusual noise
    • There is any water or refrigerant leak

Tip:Do not pay until the full test run is done.

  7. Choose a reputable installer

However good the unit, a poor installation will still cause faults.

    A professional installer will

    • Give a clear quote before starting
    • Follow a standard technical procedure
    • Offer a clear warranty

This choice shapes most of your experience with the air conditioner.
